ProMods and TMP: The First Weekend

As most of you will have noticed, two weeks ago TMP opened their servers for ProMods. Seeing so many of you try it out made us very proud of the hard work we have delivered over the last months. Apart from some small hiccoughs, we can safely say that the launch was an enormous success.

Infrastructure

We had anticipated an increase of activity on our services, but the way you guys hit us last weekend struck us as a complete surprise. All of our old records were shattered. We have never seen so many people on our forum at the same time before. We have never seen so many people register in a single weekend. We have never served this amount of bandwidth in a weekend. And the list keeps going on. We want to thank you for this overwhelming support!

A special shoutout must be made to Rick from Simulator Radio. He kindly offered some additional servers for the free download service, which really saved us that weekend. The demand for our services was 5 times higher than we had anticipated, giving us some serious headache. We did add more bandwidth to the free download server ourselves, but we were unable to keep up with the demand. Simulator Radio reached out and offered 3 high performance servers, which we added to the pool on top of our existing servers. During this time, we noticed a 99% success rate of downloads completing compared to a very small percentage of people complaining about problems (in the scheme of things).

In the image you can clearly see a rise in requests. This was very much unexpected – for the first 24 hours, Cloudflare kept us online, but we had to upgrade some services to prevent any future outages. The top 5 requests came from the following countries:

  • Germany at 4,463,016
  • Turkey at 2,403,503
  • Poland at 2,183,169
  • Russia at 1,379,813
  • France at 1,338,208

Looking back at the launch now, we have gathered a lot of useful data for future releases. We will evaluate them to improve our systems for the future. A small word of advice to the players; In the future we plan to have a new ProMods version available before TMP opens the servers, so you can already download the mod beforehand.

Last but not least, of course we enjoyed ourselves as well by driving around our map. Below are some of the screenshots that our team members took during their journeys.

ProMods: Canada – Progress Update

Today marks six months since our first blog post announcing our ATS project ProMods: Canada, so we figured it’d be the perfect time to update you on what’s been going on for the past six months.

First of all, we’re happy to announce that the first version of ProMods: Canada will feature at least two additional cities to the original seven that we announced back then, these being Abbotsford and Salmon Arm. Here’s the map with those two cities added:

We’ve also been working hard at building a collection of custom assets for use in Canada. Some of you may have seen that an already well known member of the ETS2/ATS community, Smarty, has recently joined our team where he’s creating a vast number of special models and signs. Some examples of these are found below:

But the custom stuff doesn’t stop at Smarty’s signs; we’ve also been preparing a number of custom company prefabs; these are delivery points that are 100% location unique so you won’t find the same layout anywhere else in the map. Our ETS2 map currently totals over 80 unique delivery points so it only makes sense that we treat Canada in the same way:

The map also wouldn’t be complete without some special Canadian vehicles, so we’ve made sure to cover that as well:

So, a lot of asset talk, but how about some info on how the map’s progressing? You’ll be happy to hear that things are progressing well. For a start, we’ve managed to port the border check functions over from ETS2 and have made progress at the USA/Canada borders:

The cities have also progressed. Make sure to look out for some recognisable brands whilst traveling through them:

The rest of the map has been progressing as you’d expect. Here are some pictures:

So then, a lot’s been going on in the past six months but where does this leave us in terms of map progression? We’ve occasionally mentioned that we have been hoping for a pre-2020 release but unfortunately it’s looking like we might overshoot that target by a little bit. The team working on Canada is small and we want to make sure to bring as much quality as we can, so whilst we could rush to finish everything before 2020 we’re not going to do so.

And finally, a quick note on DLC requirements: As anyone who uses ProMods for ETS2 will know, our current map requires the user to have all the current map DLCs installed. This is so we can use the many useful assets that each one contains and they often integrate with other parts of our map. With Canada we are taking a different approach, We’ll be using as few DLCs as possible. This means we’ll only be requiring DLCs that directly border Canada or have some really useful assets. At current, these will be The Oregon and Washington DLCs, New Mexico won’t be required and we expect the same for Utah when it releases.

So that’s all we’ve got for you today. We’ll continue to post development screenshots on the forum and our social media platforms, so make sure to follow them for the latest ProMods: Canada updates!

ProMods goes Multiplayer

ProMods 2.42 brings compatibility with the most popular mod for Euro Truck Simulator 2: TruckersMP. If you want to remain playing Singleplayer there is no need to update your ProMods, since 2.42 does not add any new content. If you are planning on playing ProMods on Multiplayer then ProMods 2.42 is a must (ProMods 2.42 will also work on Singleplayer). ProMods 2.42 will ONLY work on ETS2 version 1.35.

Keep in mind that TruckersMP hasn’t put the ProMods server online yet. Follow their socials to get a notification when the ProMods servers go live.

ProMods 2.42 brings some very essential fixes in order to get TruckersMP compatible with ProMods. Some people might think that this was an easy task but let me assure you: it wasn’t. Several big changes had to be made in prefab data all over the map. While we did try to fix most of the compatibility issues, we can only gather enough data when a lot of people are using it. Hence why 2.42 is considered an “Open Beta”, where we are still gathering data about potential problems that may arise while playing ProMods in TruckersMP.

Since ProMods was never designed to work with TruckersMP in mind, it is a humongous task to get everything working from the first try. We expect to release an update for the 2.42 within a short timeframe (1-2 months) also to accommodate the 1.36 update which is currently in Open Beta.

We’ll be opening a new section of the forum where you can report any issues you face whilst running 2.42 with TruckersMP – Please note that if you find an issue that you suspect is caused by the TruckersMP client consider reporting the issue on TruckersMP’s site as we would like to reserve our forums for issues caused by ProMods in combination with TruckersMP only.

ProMods 2.42 will give you guys a first glance in what TruckersMP and ProMods have to offer for you. The coming ProMods version will contain tons of fixes to make the experience better. Not to forget that we are also still working on creating new areas, both in ETS2 and ATS. To keep up to date with these development, visit our forums.

We expect that many of you will have questions as to how exactly ProMods will work in TruckersMP and how you can start playing ProMods on TruckersMP yourself. It is highly likely that you can find the answers to your questions in the Knowledge Base Articles that TruckersMP will be posting on their website closer to the release. All you need from us is the newest ProMods version (in this case ProMods 2.42) installed in your mod folder. If ProMods 2.42 works in singe player, it will also work in Multiplayer.

But what if I only want to play single player?

ProMods 2.42 will work on both TruckersMP and the single player game, if you only wish to play on single player consider ProMods 2.42 to be a normal update and all future ProMods versions will be compatible with both single player and TruckersMP. Keep in mind that ProMods 2.42 adds nothing new compared to ProMods 2.41, so the update is not a must for people who want to play single player only. Our new partnership with TruckersMP doesn’t mean we’ll be operating any differently to how we did before, we’ll still be improving and expanding the map in the same way we’ve been doing for the past six years.

Compatibility Updates for ETS2 1.35 Released

Less than a month ago SCS released the new Euro Truck Simulator 2 1.35 update. Considering our final testing phase takes 2~3 weeks we have managed to push this large update out in record breaking time.

It wasn’t easy to get ProMods 2.4 converted for this new version; taking a lot of time and practically all our resources. Not only did we have to update many models to be able to support DirectX 11, and some of our road elements to support the new voice navigation feature… We also had to merge in the new parts of the SCS Germany rework and since some of these areas were already rebuilt in ProMods, we had to merge various bits and pieces from our work into the work from the SCS developers.

However, we think that we have struck a good balance between SCS and ProMods mapping. For example, Nuremberg is still present as a ProMods city, with the highway system upgraded to the standard from the SCS team. And not only did we do merging work, but we also upgraded many assets along the way, such as in Ukraine. This is only the start of what is to come in this area.

There were many bugs arising from the newly implemented feature of voice navigation, so we fixed our prefabs so that the player is given the correct instructions. Unfortunately, there are a small number of issues which we were unable to resolve – at least for now. So the same rule applies for voice navigation as in real life: “Don’t trust the satnav blindly!”

With this conversion and merge behind us, we can now fully focus our resources on creating ProMods 2.5, and, of course, on our other project, ProMods Canada.

The support for DirectX 11 in Euro Truck Simulator 2 also made compatibility updates of our add-ons Trailer & Company Pack and Cabin Accessories Pack necessary. Both updates are available for download now.

ProMods 2.40 With Merged Baltics is Available Now!

Finally we have finished the merge of the new Beyond the Baltic Sea DLC with ProMods and now you can enjoy this new DLC together with our mod. This new version will therefore require users to have the new Beyond the Baltic Sea DLC installed to use it.

In this version, about 30 cities were added or improved in Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, and Sweden. We also worked on many roads and landscapes in different countries.

To reduce the files size and clean up our mod, we removed some old prefabs and models which were no longer in use or where better versions are available now. So if you use other maps in combination with ProMods, there’s a change that these add-on maps may be broken and require an update themself.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

We have decided to release version 2.40 for ETS 2 build 1.34 as that is the current and official version. ProMods 2.40 brings in the Beyond the Baltic Sea DLC content and has been in development for quite a while now, so we did not want to withhold release any longer. It may take up to a month for SCS to release build 1.35, which will render this version INCOMPATIBLE.

It is your personal decision whether you want to access the new 2.40 content now, or if you wish to spare your €1 and wait until the next ProMods update will be released, which will support 1.35. This is likely to be at least six weeks away, and even more likely to be even longer to fully get all 1.35 content back in ProMods.

You can always roll back your game version in the Steam Library properties selecting “temporary_1_34 – 1.34.x for incompatible mods” – when 1.35 is out.

ProMods ATS – A New World is Born

Our very first version of ProMods began as an expansion into the northern regions of Europe. Now, 6 years later, it’s time for the younger brother of ETS2 to get the same treatment. Therefore we are excited to officially announce our next major project:

PROMODS ATS – CANADA

Vancouver B.C.

You may have already seen a certain video we posted on our YouTube channel a few weeks ago. Since this video was released on April 1st, quite some people doubted its legitimacy. We would like to confirm that this project is indeed real!

With the Washington DLC by SCS on its way, we are excited to expand the map further north. The first stage of the mod will include a part of the province of British Columbia, with cities like Vancouver, Kamloops, and Kelowna. Our goal is to consistently expand throughout the vast and beautiful regions of Canada, although this is a very long-term process.

Below we have a map showing what is planned for the initial release. We still have a lot of work to do, so we will not announce any release dates for now, but we will keep you updated on our progress.

If you would like to keep up to date on developments, we now have a Development thread on our forum . We have already been working on the project for a few months, so we have some screenshots to show already. Do you recognise any areas? As always, areas shown are W.I.P. and may not be finalised. Enjoy!

40,000 Facebook Likes and Merging Progress for our Upcoming Version

Our Facebook page recently reached a massive 40,000 likes. We’re proud to deliver an enhanced experience to so many fans, so we’re always happy to see our community growing even larger. If you haven’t already, give us a like – let’s see how quickly we can reach 50k! You can also follow us on Twitter and Instagram.

To celebrate this milestone we thought we’d give some extra insight into the merging process of the Beyond the Baltic Sea DLC and SCS’ rebuilt northern Germany.

Previously, merging new DLCs with our map was a relatively easy job. The Scandinavia DLC only shared one real border with our map. Therefore, creating compatibility with our pack was easy, even though we sadly had to say goodbye to many ProMods v1.0 areas and memories. The same goes for the Italy DLC, where most of our mapping was already a few years old and had aged poorly, especially due to the lack of models for the distinctive Italian architecture which SCS did such a good job with. Only France was a bit more challenging, but the rebuilt old map in Northern France provided a bit of a buffer between our map and the DLC, which made things easier. With the Germany rebuild and Beyond the Baltic Sea DLC, however, merging has proven to be a much more complicated task.

More Borders

In the previous merges we often could copy-paste large areas very quickly, and connecting them was not hard. This DLC is a completely different story. We have many small areas that need merging individually. Pasting a small area into the map is not a big deal, but connecting it properly can be difficult.

For example, we have previously done massive rebuilds in Elbłąg and Suwałki, such that the road network on the Polish side of the border has undergone many changes. This meant that at some points the road alignment made re-connecting the roads very difficult. One of the bigger problems is that the border crossings in our map were a kilometer further north than the ones from SCS. We had to compress and sometimes completely rebuild the entire border area.

What also didn’t help was that at the border area near Suwałki there was a height difference of 50 meters between SCS’ and our mapping. It was a big challenge to facilitate this difference without creating a new (and rather unrealistic) “alpine road”. There were similar problems for some of our scenery villages and towns in the Baltic States.

Finland

Finland was another hard merge. ProMods Finland is bigger than that of the DLC so we decided to remove our overlapping part. This makes sense because our southern Finland was comprised of some of the oldest mapping in the mod, so we have retired it while retaining plenty of ProMods content in northern Finland. Although this eliminated the need to merge many small areas back in, we were still left with many roads to connect, again all with different heights. Furthermore, some of our northern Finland is aging as well, so we have started refreshing our areas with the new assets the DLC brings. Some cities have already received a makeover, such as Oulu and Vaasa; others remain to be done. A more specific problem was that Pori had no obvious connection to the north to Vaasa and Oulu. We had to improvise there with completely new landscape.

Germany Merge

This may be the hardest project of them all. Our Autobahn Rebuilding Project (ARP) started almost 4 years ago! The challenge here is to try and keep the best of both worlds, but it’s sadly not as simple as just choosing between ProMods and SCS city by city or road by road: not only are there the aforementioned height differences to deal with, but we have to keep the mapping style reasonably consistent throughout the map or player immersion will be broken. Now that SCS has provided new and better assets we have to incorporate them into our mapping to stop it looking dated.

Moreover, mapping techniques and standards have evolved over the last 4 years to the extent that the oldest areas feel technically unrefined, even ugly, next to the newest ones – even with refreshed assets. In such cases it can be easier to start from scratch, which ultimately delivers a better map but requires a lot of developer time and motivation.

But That’s Not All!

While the merging was going on, brand new content has been prepared as well. The Czech Republic got a serious overhaul and there has been some expansion in the Balkans and in Scotland as well. There are a few additions here and there spread all over the map, all laid out for you to discover in the next version! We can reveal that we are nearly done merging everything we planned for ProMods version 2.40 (you may have previously seen it referred to as version 2.35, but we decided that the amount of content justifies calling it 2.40) and have started the first testing phase.

You can expect more merged, rebuilt and brand new content in the DLC and Germany areas in future updates, especially in the Baltic states. Having said that, don’t be surprised if we overwrite many old ProMods areas with SCS work. We have got a lot of comments from fans who feel nostalgic about old ProMods work and want us to keep it. We feel nostalgic too! But we have to keep the map up to today’s standards which, sadly, means we have to say goodbye to the oldest areas. If we could, we’d always update everything to the latest standards, but this is not possible even with our large development team. Instead, we have to prioritise where we work, which means that SCS’ latest – and vastly improved since the game’s release – mapping has lower priority.

Of course, the release date of ProMods 2.40 is still unknown (even to us), but we can assure you that 2019 will bring many cool updates from our team for all ETS2 players.

Changes in the download methods

Since 2013, our paid download service has been strictly set to $1 per download and we have kept that unchanged. Initially our payment gateway only supported USD. Times have changed, as has the popularity of our mod and the infrastructure we are hosting it on, therefore we have now changed the currency to EUR.

Why is the Euro a better option for us today?

  • the vast majority of ProMods users are European
  • the Euro is a leading worldwide currency and still gaining popularity
  • our payment gateway partners now finally support Euro payments
  • all of our infrastructure and server hosting bills are paid in Euro
  • PayPal takes a big chunk in fees for every Dollar exchanged to Euro

We are aware that changing the currency increases the price slightly, but we believe this shouldn’t be a major issue for our loyal fans. There is no plan to increase or change our pricing further, any time in the future. The main pack is set to €1 and the TCP to €0.50.

While our funds will increase slightly we can spend more money on our core infrastructure, amongst which the free download servers. Thanks to this change we can now offer a 50% speed increase on the free servers, to 300kb/s. The maximum amount of concurrent downloads remains set to two.

About our server infrastructure

Maybe you wonder what your €1 contribution means to us? Well, we use it to keep our infrastructure running and we cover our software licenses to keep expanding the mod.

Our main front-end systems run on on a network of servers hosted by Linode in Frankfurt and New York, and they are cached in the cloud globally by CloudFlare. They include two web servers that host the forum and the blog, a database server and a development server for the production environment of ProMods.

Paid downloads are hosted on servers provided by Amazon S3 and cached worldwide, through our partner Payloadz.
Free downloads are hosted on servers provided by Scaleway in Paris and Amsterdam. We scale these servers based on demand, and we typically use at least four to cope with a new release launch.

When we started in 2013 we hosted the mod on a simple file-sharing site, but it was enough to crash the website instantly. We had never imagined in our wildest dreams that our project would grow this big. On average ProMods generates a whopping 100TB of data traffic every month. Enough to get us lifetime bans on popular file-hosting sites.

Each month, the combined websites serve almost 40 million requests and despite DDoS protection, there are still 50,000 attempts to attack our site.
As you can see, these systems require money to keep ticking. Your contribution helps us paying for these servers and delivering our mod.

Alternative payment options

We often get questions about alternative payments by members  “not wanting a PayPal account”.
First of all; you can use a credit card without logging into PayPal and creating an account.
If you do have an account but require alternative means to top it up, you can bank transfer funds to your PayPal or use PaySafeCard to do so.

Unfortunately we currently do not have a solution for countries where PayPal is blocked by the government, our apologies for that. We can however reveal that our partner Payloadz is looking to support multiple alternative payment gateways some time in 2019.

Thank you so much for supporting ProMods!

Happy New Year!

It’s time to take a look back at 2018, which was a special year for our team. We celebrated the 5th anniversary of the release of ProMods 1.0! We expanded to the southeastern corner of Europe with Greece and Cyprus in version 2.3 of the map. We filled in more and more gaps in the map with all the details and unique places which keep the game interesting. And we also added support for the Special Transport DLC including new custom routes, with more to come in future map versions.

We Wish You a Happy New Year!

What’s in store for 2019? The next major version of the map will contain the new scenery of SCS’ Baltic region combined with a merge of our own work in the Baltics, so you can enjoy the best of both worlds. Please note, from then on, the “Beyond the Baltic Sea” DLC will be required for ProMods.

Work also continues to merge SCS’ rebuilt northern Germany with our previous work from the Autobahn Rebuilding Project. Merging projects of this scale is difficult; it’s not as simple as just joining together sections of SCS and ProMods mapping like a puzzle. Much of the northern ARP is a few years old by now, meaning that we have to perform asset upgrades for it not to look dated next to SCS’ more recent and polished work. In some cases it’s easiest to start over, so you can expect some brand new work in the next big update.

We also hope to bring you some major updates to the Trailer and Company Pack during 2019. The mod had to be restructured in 2018 due to SCS’ new trailer and cargo system, which has laid the groundwork for it to receive new content and quality upgrades.

You can always follow our development on our forums to get the latest news about the regions we are working on.

We would like to thank all of our fans for their dedication. Our community is still growing and we’re close to 40,000 followers on Facebook and 9,000 followers on Twitter. Thank you and enjoy the new year!

ProMods 2.32 and Updated Add-ons Are Now Available!

A12 - Latvia

SCS Software has recently released update 1.33 for Euro Truck Simulator 2. We are proud to provide you with our compatibility updates for the ProMods map and both add-ons nearly at the same time. Do not expect any new content in these updates. However, we have included several language translations for city and cargo names, a new feature introduced in ETS2 1.33.

Please note that ProMods 2.32 is not officially compatible with the “Beyond the Baltic Sea” DLC. If you have the DLC, you can still run ProMods 2.32 but you would only be able to access the ProMods Baltic region rather than the DLC version. A future update to ProMods will require the DLC and allows you to explore SCS’s version of the Baltic region.
